Required Forms:
Form 1120, U.S. Corporation Tax Return
To file their income taxes, C corporations and LLCs choosing to be taxed as C corporations must use Form 1120, the U.S. Corporation Income Tax Return.
Whether you are preparing Form 1120 yourself or engaging a tax professional, ensure you have the following information ready to accurately complete and file the form:
Form 1120 can be filed either electronically using the IRS e-file service or via mail. After completing Form 1120, you will know the amount of tax your corporation owes. If this exceeds $500 for the year, the corporation is required to make these tax payments in quarterly instalments.

If your company operates on a fiscal year rather than the calendar year, your corporate tax return (Form 1120) is due on the 15th day of the fourth month following the end of your fiscal year. For instance, if your fiscal year concludes on February 1, your Form 1120 should be filed by May 15.
There is an exception: for corporations with a fiscal year ending on June 30, the deadline shifts to the 15th day of the 3rd month after the fiscal year's end, meaning a September 15 deadline.
If you transition from being a C corp or an LLC taxed as a C corp to an S corp or partnership, most deadlines remain the same except the C corporation tax return deadline of April 15.
For S corporations and partnerships, the tax return (Form 1120-S for S corporations and Form 1065 for partnerships) is due on March 15.
It's important to note that S corporations and partnerships themselves don't pay income taxes. Instead, taxes are paid on the individual incomes of the shareholders or partners.
March 15 is also the deadline to request an extension for S corp/ partnership tax returns.
Relevant Forms:
C corporations, S corporations, LLCs, and partnerships all utilize Form 7004 to request an extension on their tax filings, except for sole proprietors who should use Form 4868.
The deadline for submitting Form 7004 aligns with the due date of your 1120-S. For instance, if you operate as a calendar year S corporation, your Form 7004 should be filed by March 15, 2024.
Form 7004 provides a six-month extension, allowing you until September 15, 2024, to file Form 1120-S. However, it's crucial to understand that this extension applies only to filing and not to any tax payments due.
If you anticipate owing taxes, it's essential to pay them by the original deadline. For assistance in estimating your tax liability, you might find our tax liability estimation guide helpful.
